Top 10 Smiths Songs

NME just published their list of top 10 songs by The Smiths as voted for by readers, and it’s a pretty stagnant list. Full of obvious choices, only well known songs. Basically it looks like a list compiled by people with a passing interest in but no real knowledge of the Smiths, not obsessives like me. Their list looked like this:

1. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
2. This Charming Man
3. How Soon Is Now?
4. Bigmouth Strikes Again
5. Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now
6. Panic
7. The Boy With The Thorn In His Side
8. What Difference Does It Make?
9. The Queen Is Dead
10. Hand In Glove

Whilst all the songs are great, it’s just not a particularly good list, so I decided to do my own, which looks like this:

1. I Know It’s OverĀ
2. Paint A Vulgar Picture
3. Suffer Little Children
4. Reel Around The Fountain
5. Still Ill
6. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
7. You Just Haven’t Earned It Yet, Baby
8. Half A Person
9. Sweet And Tender Hooligan
10. A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours

It’s not totally definite, I could easily move some of the songs about in their order and I’ve missed out some classics like ‘How Soon Is Now?’, ‘The Queen Is Dead’ and ‘Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want’. But for now, that’s my list and it’s as strong a bunch of songs and you’ll find by any band. (Note: Only 1 song overlap with NME’s list – their #1 at my #6)
